Instagram Reels: Captions vs Transcripts — What Is the Difference?

Captions are burned into video. Transcripts are the full spoken text. Both matter — but for different parts of your workflow.

Creators often say "captions" when they mean three different things: burned-in text on video, the Instagram description, or a full speech-to-text transcript. Mixing them up leads to weak repurposing and inconsistent branding.

Burned-in captions (on-screen)

These are pixels in the video file. They boost watch time on mute and look native in Reels. Hatcut"s workspace export path burns styled captions with word-level animation — ideal for final delivery.

Description captions (post copy)

The text field under your Reel is for hooks, CTAs, and hashtags — not a word-for-word transcript. Pull highlights from a transcript instead of dumping 400 words into the description.

Full transcripts (workflow asset)

Use the Instagram transcript generator to capture everything spoken. Archive transcripts in Notion or Google Drive; link to them from campaign docs.

A simple rule

Transcript = source of truth. Description = marketing copy derived from transcript. Burned captions = viewer experience in the feed.

When you need all three, start with transcription — it is the fastest step and informs the other two.
