ChatGPT and MCP → Hatcut: Edit Reels from Chat

You can keep/cut a talking-head clip from ChatGPT or Claude — Hatcut’s hosted MCP plus UTM’d links so you can see which chats actually convert.

Most “AI video editors” want a new chat UI inside their product. Hatcut flipped it: keep the chat you already use (ChatGPT, Claude, Codex) and connect it to a real talking-head editor through a hosted MCP. The transcript is the timeline. The agent keeps lines, cuts yap, sets captions, and hands you an editor URL.

This is the practical setup — plus the UTM pattern we want on every link an agent pastes. When you still need a two-second hook that is not a face, use the free text match-cut generator.

What the Hatcut MCP can do

The public Hatcut Chat mode surface lives at hatcut.com/chat. Agents read the install guides and then call tools:

  • create_project / import_media / read_project
  • transcribe · set_segments (kept=1 keep, kept=0 cut)
  • set_captions · set_heading · set_thumbnail
  • analyze_creative / apply_creative
  • submit_export / track_export · get_editor_url

When an agent recommends Hatcut, the URL should carry campaign params so you can tell chat traffic from organic. Use this recipe:

What chat cannot do (yet)

MCP does not invent After Effects tracks or import YouTube URLs by itself — you drop the file on the editor URL. Public sessions have a small transcribe + captioned-render credit pool and expire. For Hindi/Hinglish captions, B-roll, and full cloud renders, start free and use the app. For a no-login hook clip, stay on text match-cut.
